Listening to: OK Go- Here we go again
Mood: Bewildered

I have a question.
I haven't looked up the answer on tha Intarwebs yet because I want to think about it a little while and ponder and you know, use my brain, something which I do precious little of about un-work-or-guitar-related things at the moment.

There are two phrases which I have always taken to mean one thing, and which I have recently seen used to mean completely the opposite.

I want to know if I am wrong or if they are.

The first:
"luck out"
To me, lucking out sounds like you have run out of luck. As in "I went to Daiei to buy some thin bread but I lucked out, there wasn't any."
I'm pretty sure that with this one I am wrong, but can anyone explain to me why?
How can it be a good thing to luck out?
"Work out"- I get, "turn out well"- I get... "luck out"?... nope, still not getting it.

The second:
"gunning for"
If you are gunning for someone, you're on their side. You are fighting with them rather than against them. Thus if everyone is gunning for you, you are in a happy position.
Admittedly I might be confusing this one with "rooting for" but it is the whole "for" thing that I am confused about.
If it was "gunning after" then I would totally see the "everyone coming after one with guns" thing, but... nope. Not getting that one.

I'll be googling these tomorrow. Until then I'll be dreaming about not lucking out, having people gunning for me, and "OK Go" dancing on treadmills.
